Summary

Dr. Hannan is recognized as a successful and passionate oral health professional, both nationally and internationally. A diversified educational background at postgraduate level has put Dr. Hannan in a unique position both as a clinician and a researcher. He finished his Ph.D in Conservative Dentistry from Hokkaido University, Japan at a very early stage of his life and subsequently pursued for his second graduate school and obtained Masters of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Texas, USA. Soon after, he returned to Bangladesh with a distinct aim to contribute in the improvement of oral health of the nation.


With a very humble approach, started a dental clinic along with his friends of similar background, began working with a brand new concept of delivering service to the patients in a team approach. He was simultaneously involved in planning Sapporo Dental College, Dhaka to produce quality dentists and offer improved oral health service to the nation. Eventually the dream started taking shape in the year 2000 and Dr. Hannan led from the front as the head of the institute till 2013. At he heads the department of Conservative dentistry and relentlessly working to materialize his unfulfilled dream to render direct service to the underserved, through public health programs, develop a sustainable “Oral Health Care Delivery Model “targeting the underprivileged, to improve their quality of life. He also shoulders multiple institutional and social responsibilities and commits himself in his relentless struggle to improve educational, social and humanitarian condition.


Dr. Hannan conducted substantial number of oral health research as the Principal Investigator both at national and international level, supported by Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) and Hokkaido University, Japan. Among his numerous international publications, the most recent one entitled “Prevalence of Gingivitis, Plaque accumulation, Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth Among Slum Population in Bangladesh” published in 2014 (BMRC Bulletin, Vol.40,No.2). The publication was recognized as a global landmark paper on slum oral health by the rating of Research Gate, Germany, and is being read and cited by researchers all over the world. Dr.Hannan had the rare honor to be a speaker as an invited presenter in the “International Academy of Periodontology” held in Kyoto, Japan in 1988. He also had the privilege to participate in a short-course entitled “Improving the Quality of Health Services” conducted by Harvard School of Public Health held in October 2012 in Boston, USA.


Besides, he worked as the director in a community based research project and was involved in planning, designing and executing the project named – “Oral health for slum dwellers” held at Tongi, Bangladesh, supported, under the ‘Grass Root Human Security Project’ by the Embassy of Japan. Dr. Hannan also worked as a consultant on a model project under the ‘Grass Root Activities of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’ from 2009 – 2012.

Nationally, Dr. Hannan is a member of panel of reviewers of Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) for more than fifteen years. At present, besides teaching, he is patiently working and passionately involved to develop a sustainable “Oral Health Care Service Delivery Model”,to render service to the masses, utilizing acquired knowledge and experience in this essential but apparently neglected area of health science in the context of Bangladesh.


Because of blessed creative frame of mind, Dr Hannan always picks up new ideas works and ingeniously works to give them shape. He is very keen to serve the poor community who cannot afford dental treatment and relentlessly involved in offering service to the poor masses through free dental camps. Recently he launched a new project to serve the non anchored children in collaboration with Palli Shishu Foundation and Dhaka Shishu Hospital.


He shares his ideas with people of similar background and identical spirit. The most recent mission “Advanced Dental Life Line and Research Center” is a well thought scheme of Dr. Kaja Md Shahidullah (an icon in his area of dental specialty in the country). and Dr Hannan. The prime idea is to provide global standard “Dental Service” to the patients and its continued improvement with concurrent Clinical Research.
